Industry and Economics: Samoa and Ukraine

Samoa:


  • GDP (gross domestic product) = 4,212.36 USD as of 2013
  • Literacy Rate = 98.54%
  • HDI (human development index) = 0.702
  • GII (gender inequality index) = 0.52 as of 2013
  • Major Industry = Services 59% industry 28%, agriculture 14%. Industry: tourism, coconuts, small scale manufacturing, fishing. Trade: Exports--$15.9 million: coconut products, fish, (processing of automotive components).
  • Main Energy Resource = In terms of electricity generation, 67.67% of the total electricity generation in the fiscal year 2010/2011 were based on diesel generation, while the remaining share is based on hydropower generation.
  • Wallenstein's World Systems Level =  Periphery
  • Rostow's Stage (and why) =  Pre-conditions to take off because Samoa remains majority based on income from their primary sector.

Ukraine:

  • GDP (gross domestic product) = 3,900.47 USD as of 2013
  • Literacy Rate = 99.74%
  • HDI (human development index) = 0.747
  • GII (gender inequality index) = 0.338, ranking it 57 out of 148 countries in the 2012 index. 
  • Major Industry = 20 major industries, namely power generating, fuel, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, chemical and petrochemical and gas, machine-building and metal-working, forest, woodworking and wood pulp and paper, construction materials, light, food and others.
  • Main Energy Resource = Natural gas and oil
  • Wallerstein's World Systems Level (core, semi-periphery, or periphery?) = Periphery
  • Rostow's Stage (and why) =  Stage 3: take off because Ukraine is industrializing and there's development in modern social, economics and political institutes.
